How Durolane Works

Durolane is strikingly similar to the fluid naturally found surrounding joints. The natural fluid lubricates and acts as a shock absorber. In osteoarthritis, cartilage in the joint begins to break down and this fluid becomes thinner and generally less functional, which leads to inflammation, stiffness, and pain.

The medication is specially formulated to be resistant to breaking down and it provides sufficient lubrication and shock absorption like the natural fluid. This effect often lasts up to six months, and treatment can be repeated if needed in the future.

In clinical trials as well as real-world use, Durolane has proven effective and safe.

What to Expect from Durolane

Most patients find Durolane is very effective at treating pain and stiffness in osteoarthritis, and a single injection is often enough to alleviate symptoms for up to six months. Injections may be repeated somewhere between 3 months and 6 months, depending on a range of factors.

At no point should Durolane be administered if there is an infection in or around the joint being treated.

In most cases initial injections will be administered in a healthcare setting, after which patients may buy Durolane for home administration. During these initial injections the healthcare worker should show and explain the procedure to ease patient self-administration in the future.

General treatment guidelines are:

• Prepare the injection site by swabbing it with an antiseptic solution.
• Administer topical or local anesthetic, if desired.
• Insert the syringe needle into the joint. The correct location and method should have been demonstrated in a medical setting.
• If present, any joint effusion should be removed. This also ensures needle location is correct.
• Leaving the needle inserted, remove the vial containing joint effusion and apply the vial containing Durolane.
• Inject the Durolane. For knees and hips the standard dose is 3 ml, though this may vary with doctor advice. For smaller joints less of the medication will be needed.
• Avoid strenuous activity or weight-bearing activities for at least 48 hours following an injection. A doctor may advise even longer.
• Treatment can be repeated, if needed, at 6 months, or sooner if a doctor advises so.

Some pain may be experienced right after an injection is given, but it should be completely gone within 48 hours provided weight-bearing and strenuous activities are avoided. Many patients buy Durolane when other medications and/or lifestyle changes no longer provide significant pain relief. It is so effective that it can even delay surgical intervention for several years.

Side Effects

The only true contraindication to Durolane is hypersensitivity to it. Patients who are allergic to birds or egg products should speak with a doctor about potential risks prior to administration.

Patients with a history of blood clots should also speak with a doctor about risks before proceeding with treatment.

Side effects are rare, and most of them occur shortly after the injection is administered. These should fade away in the next day or two. Relatively common are:

• Redness, stiffness, or other irritation around injection site
• Runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, or other cold-like symptoms
• Mild nausea or stomach discomfort
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Tingly feeling
• Swelling in hands or feet
• Difficulty walking

The above are generally not cause for concern unless severe enough to be disruptive or persistent past the first few days; if they are disruptive or persistent, a doctor should be consulted.

Effects of this product on unborn or nursing babies are unclear; in general, treatment should be avoided by pregnant or breastfeeding mothers.
